Best Cities To Source Wholesale Clothing And Fabric

Posted on

While most clothing manufacturing has moved overseas, there are still companies that make their clothing right here in the United States. It's not impossible to stock your store with finds that are all made in the US, or to source fabric and manufacture your own line in-house. There is a call for manufacturing to return to American soil and this is a trend that will continue in the coming years. The following cities are your best bet for finding wholesale fabrics, trims, notions, and clothing designed and manufactured in the United States. Visiting these cities will help you fill your store, catalog, or website with fashionable goods that are made domestically.

Los Angeles, CA

The Fashion District in Los Angeles is a buyer's dream. With over 200 stores selling clothes, textiles, and notions, the Los Angeles Fashion District has the largest selection of textiles and notions in the United States. The District stretches for 100 city blocks and many of the stores are open to the public and 80% of the stores are wholesale. You can buy clothing directly from designer show rooms or fabric from one of the many vendors. The Los Angeles Fashion District has five market weeks that feature trade shows, every year.

New York, NY

The New York Garment District is one of the most famous fashion districts in the world. There are thousands of stores that sell apparel, notions, trim, jewelry, and accessories. The district originally started as all retail stores but now mainly caters to wholesale customers. Most stores are open to the public, as well as specialty stores that are available to people in the fashion trade. There are seventy-five trade shows every year, and thousands of showrooms to snatch up bargains and wholesale apparel.

Portland, OR

With several winners and runner-ups on reality shows about sewing hailing from this fair city, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise that Portland is gaining steam in the fashion world. Home to two of the largest fabric stores in the country, Portland has long been a destination for designers in the greater Northwest. These stores offer fabric at wholesale and retail prices. There are also mill ends, seconds, and limited runs of fabrics that can be bought for a song.

Portland also has the second longest running Fashion Week in the country. Portland is home to the headquarters of several large retailers, which draws talented designers to this city. One of these retailers operates one of the only stateside fabric mills, which is within an hour's drive of Portland. While there is no centralized fashion district, there are local designers sprinkled throughout the city and their numbers are growing stronger every year. A lot of the clothing that these designers are selling are made in Portland or Los Angeles.
